Here's some information about Health Coaching and why you may need one.

Health coaching is growing in popularity, however, not all people understand what Health Coaches do.

What is a Health Coach?

A Health Coach is a supportive mentor who helps clients feel their best through food and lifestyle.

"Just as a sports coach can help an athlete develop and excel at a sport, a health and wellness coach can help anyone excel at living their life, even — or especially — if they have chronic medical conditions." - Peter Grinspoon, MD Harvard Health

"People tend to hire health coaches to help them with a broad variety of health issues, such as weight loss, stress reduction, the management of chronic conditions, improving diet and exercise, tobacco cessation, addiction, and adjusting to a life-altering health event, like a heart attack. " he adds.

What makes a Health Coach unique?

"To live a vibrant life, we all need holistic support. And as a Health Coach, that guidance and accountability – from exercise and nutrition to relationships, career, and spirituality – is exactly what you’ll offer your clients"

Health and Wellness Coach is a guide, mentor, and aide who helps a client take responsibility for his or her own health, they encourage personal responsibility.

A Health and Wellness Coach can be seen as a source of support on your wellness journey who helps a client to focus on weight management, food cravings, sleep, energy, stress management, smoking cessation, diabetes management, among other health empowerment areas.

We do not however diagnose, treat or take responsibility for bringing about wellness changes in a client’s life; rather, he/she guides and supports the client as they progress towards personal wellness goals while working alongside other Healthcare professionals of their client if needed.

Is there evidence that Health Coaching works?

'Coaching is effective for people managing a variety of health conditions. According to a recent study, coaching “results in clinically relevant improvements in multiple biomarker risk factors (including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides, fasting glucose, body weight, body mass index, waist circumference, and cardiorespiratory fitness) in diverse populations.”

Coaching has also helped improve health-related quality of life and reduced hospital admissions in patients with COPD. No wonder some doctors’ offices are offering it, some insurance companies are paying for it, and private companies are even starting to offer coaching to their employees in order to lower their healthcare costs.' - Peter Grinspoon, MD Harvard Health
